Sunday. A day for rest, adventure, and of course, an abundance of warm coffee! On this particular morning I rose early to meet one of my students and a fellow alumni at a local coffee shop to coach the student on her upcoming pitch. For me, mornings like this don’t feel like work. There’s little that’s more rewarding than helping someone pursue their passion and make their vision come to life. We gathered stories, lessons learned along the way, metrics, discussed goals and her vision, and compiled them into a 12 minute presentation.

Following our productive meeting, I headed home to meet my partner, Mike. While I was out, he was busy strapping the canoe to the roof of our Jeep, eager to sneak an afternoon adventure in, even if it meant a local one. Living just blocks from the Glenmore Reservoir, we were keen to finally get the canoe out for the first time this season (yikes!). Despite it being mid-November, it was the perfect day to set out on the water. The sun was shining, the waters were clear like glass, and the cool crisp air meant we were the only ones out that day.

In preparation for a quiet afternoon, we brewed fresh coffee, kept it warm in our thermos’, packed a few of our favourite blanks, mittens, sweaters, and toques; and last but certainly not least, our cat, Gia!

Days like these recharge our batteries. Our creativity. Our connection with one another and our incredible surroundings. We laughed about our weirdness, breathed in deep gulps of fresh air, savoured our warm coffee and baileys, and relished in the silent moments.

I find there are long stretches of “business” that often deter us from leaving the nest after a long day or week. Instead, we believe a few silent moments watching Netflix are just what that doctor ordered. But the truth is, is that just two hours like this result in a clearer mind and a fresh tank of energy in much greater depths than any amount of Netflix binging could.

Stay wild. Stay weird. And go explore!
